Carly Simon said it best when she said “all the cast of characters each reflect a part of human nature.”

Characters
Winnie the Pooh is the loveable bear who is sweet yet a little forgetful. Among the other characters are the not-so-confident Piglet, the nervous Rabbit, the energetic Tigger, and Eeyore the down-trodden donkey. Children love these characters because they each have traits that children can relate to.

The collection of Winnie the Pooh books and movies have had the type of success and longevity that surpassed what creator A.A. Milne could ever have hoped for. The popularity of the characters has endured throughout the years because of the simplistic way they speak to children everywhere.

Winnie the Pooh History
Author A.A. Milne was inspired to write a special series of books with his son Christopher as the focus. The books were based on the adventures of Christopher Robin and his stuffed bear Winnie the Pooh, named after a bear he liked to visit now and then at the London Zoo. The other characters were inspired by some of Christopher’s favorite toys as well as the animals that lived in the Ashdown Forest close to their country home in Southern England.

Winnie’s Origins
The bear that inspired Milne’s character creation had his own claim to fame prior to Winnie the Pooh popularity. The real Winnie was brought over from the town of White River in Ontario to parade as the mascot for the Winnipeg Regiment of the Canadian Army before being transferred to the London Zoo.

White River celebrates Winnie’s fame with an annual festival. Winnie even has a place of honor at the train station where his statue stands to honor his memory.

Who would have thought that a children’s story book published on October 14th, 1926 would become the classic it is today. While cartoon characters come and go, Winnie the Pooh keeps thriving! Books, movies and other memorabilia of these endearing characters are enjoyed by everyone both young and old.

Winnie the Pooh Display
Christopher’s actual stuffed animals are on display in the Central Children’s Room at the Donnell Library Center in New York which is visited by over three-quarters of a million people annually.
