High
School Musical 1 & 2
Everyone
has been buzzing with High School Musical fever
since the first movie premiered on DCOM (Disney
Channel Original Movies) on January 20, 2006.
On that day, 7.7 million American viewers witnessed
what would become pop-culture phenomena, making
it one of the most successful original movies
on the Disney Channel to date. The movie’s
popularity reached even greater heights after
the sequel premiered on August 17, 2007. Since
then, it has spawned a concert, a theatre musical
production, the Disney High School Ice Tour
and rumour has it, there is a feature film in
the works.
High School Musical Story
Set in a high school in Albuquerque, New Mexico, this movie (best selling
TV movie on DVD) addresses the issues surrounding stereotypes, a topic
everyone can relate to. Watch as a couple of teens break out of their
molds and seize the opportunity to sing in a talent show. Troy Bolton
(Zac Efron), captain of the Wildcats basketball team, and Gabriella Montez
(Vanessa Hudgens) a math and science wiz, both feel the pressure to “stick
to the status quo” but find the strength in themselves to make their
own choices.
High School Musical 2
The highly anticipated sequel, High School Musical 2 (August 17, 2007)
did not disappoint, pulling in 17.24 million viewers. The songs were just
as catchy and its message just as poignant. This time Troy (Zac Efron)
and the gang have taken summer jobs together at a spa where the Evans
family are members. Driven by his chance for a scholarship, he follows
Sharpay’s (Ashley Tisdale) lead and begins to transform into the
type of person his friends can hardly recognize. Sharpay’s plan
to entice Troy with promotions and gifts make him an outcast amongst his
closest friends until he realizes what is really important, and takes
the type of action that leads to a big finale.
After the previous success of the concert and musical theatre production,
Disney’s High School Musical Ice Tour opened in August 2007 and
is scheduled to tour in 100 cities around the globe. Although the tour
does not feature the original actors, a remarkable cast of world class
skaters have taken the show to a whole new level. Songs from the original
soundtrack (best selling album of 2006) make this a widely anticipated
event.
